Matthew22:29 ESV
But Jesus answered them, "You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God."
BOOOOOM!!!! That's the sound I hear over and over again all day long out here at Gunnery as the tanks do their job. The sound of the amazingly forceful blasts resonates throughout the entire valley we are living in here every few minutes. The sound interrupts conversations, stops people in their tracks, and reminds us of the firepower we carry with us wherever we go. That's just the sound. The explosion itself can destroy almost anything in its path. It can liquefy metal. It can knock over buildings. It is powerful!
When Jesus talks about knowing the power of God He uses the Greek word "dunamis." This is the word we get the term dynamite from. The explosive power of God. The power that interrupts conversations, stops people in their tracks, and reminds us of the firepower we carry with us wherever we go! But, this power is a power that needs to be known. It needs to be equipped in the believer's life. You must know it. You must utilize it and the best way to do that is to know Scripture. Scripture is our weapon that produces the explosive power of God in our lives. Without it we end up asking the wrong questions, pointing in the wrong direction, and lacking purpose.
The power of God is meant to impact this world. It is not a flashbang that just makes a loud noise with nothing to show for it. It makes a mark. Do you know the power of God today? Know the Scriptures and His promises will release the BOOOOOM!!! In your life!

Psalm 127:1-2
Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stays awake in vain.
It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for He gives to His beloved sleep.
"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." This saying was repeated to me frequently when I was growing up. An old proverb that helps to instill a good work ethic in children at an early age. There is nothing wrong with working hard. But, today I want to ask the question... What are you working for? What are you staying awake to watch for? What are you going to bed late and rising early for? What brings you anxious toil?
This verse lays it out very clearly that unless it is for the LORD then it is in vain. You waste your anxieties. You waste your precious hours. Because without God it is all dust. Without God there is no legacy that will last. Without God you work without gain. This doesn't mean that our days should be spent with everyone becoming pastors / chaplains. No, this is a reflection of the purpose behind your work. Are you utilizing everything you do to the benefit of God and His kingdom or are you focused on your kingdom? His kingdom will last forever. Yours will be destroyed. There can be only one King. Have you given your actions eternal purpose or are you continuing to toil anxiously in vain?
The benefit of the eternal purpose is that "He gives to His beloved sleep." See the contrast? One gets no sleep, only anxiety. The other rest securely because they trust that God is in control. Rest easy child of God because you are His beloved and He holds you. Just ask yourself... "Does this have eternal consequence?"

Psalm 82:3-4 ESV
Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
Today is Memorial Day in the United States. Last night we took a moment of silence during our service to remember those who went before us. Those who willing laid down their lives for the cause of freedom and justice. When I was a civilian I remember many Memorial days passing by where I was just thankful for the day off from work. I paid little thought to those who gave it all for my security. Now that I serve in a foreign land in the footsteps of those great men and women I am reminded consistently of the call that each Soldier has. God calls us to bring justice, uphold rights, rescue, and deliver all people. Soldiers are the right hand of God in this. All gave some... Some gave all. Take a moment to reflect on this verse in silence and remember.

Hebrews 5:8
Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.
As I sat in a three hour long convoy traveling at 10 miles per hour (just about top speed) through the streets of Korea at 2300 hours my back was screaming at me. You see, we were told that we needed to wear our body armor for the entire trip. At first that wasn't an issue but, when you sit in the same position with those plates digging into your back for a while it really starts to get uncomfortable. So, about two hours into the trip the pain directed my thoughts to the question... why? Why on earth are we wearing body armor on a four hour trip through the peaceful streets of S. Korea? What's the purpose of this? Do they think someone is going to shoot at me here tonight? I knew that if I uttered the question out loud I would get a response similar to many things in the army... "because it's good Army training Hooah."
Often times when I find myself in pain, in suffering, I reach out for that one question... "why?" Or a variation in the form of "why me?" When I read the above verse I am reminded that Jesus suffered... a lot. In His pain He cried out, "My God My God Why..." It's not wrong to ask the question "why?" But, the Bible answers that question for us on multiple occasions. For Jesus it was for the purpose of obedience. Can you imagine that? You endure pain so that you can learn just to obey... sounds like Basic training all over again. Sometimes asking the question why is answered with a simple answer of... "so you can learn to obey." Do you have a heart that will accept this answer? Will you obey or is your heart in rebellion?

Lamentations 3:22-24 ESV
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him."
It is amazing how we carry things with us through life. Grudges, hurts, pain, heartache... these things that steal the joy from us before we even step foot out of our bed. They destroy relationships before we even start. They leave you feeling bitter and hollow on the inside. When I was in high school I would wake up super early in the morning so that I could get to the school early for my extra-curriculars and then stay late for practices and rehearsals. Every morning I knew that I had a ton of stuff to accomplish before I could rest and I thought that my entire future hinged on how I would do each and every day. It made me sick. Literally. The first thing I would do in the morning is walk over to the toilet and barf. Once I had that out of my system I would move through my day. I carried my stress from day to day without ever finding that rest, love, mercy, faithfulness, or new beginning. It made me sick and it will make you sick.
Maybe not physically sick but, when we carry these things through life day to day, without ever finding that peace with God in our spirit, it embitters us. It starts to rot us from the inside. But, God wants to refresh you. This morning. Right now. He says that His love and mercy are new EVERY morning! We don't have to carry them with us! Take a moment right now and close your eyes. Breathe in the peace of God and ask Him to bring to you a fresh wind of love and mercy this morning. He's good for it.

Matthew 6:21
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
During a class I was sitting in yesterday Brigadier General Mennes said, "Values determine behavior." He was talking about how what a Commander values will come out in what they do regardless of what their Philosophy is. Words can mean a lot of things and we can have the best of intentions when we write them but, they will never speak louder than the actions that you take. We can say over and over again that we value one thing and prove that we don't care about it at all with the next action that we take. This drives a lot of Soldiers crazy. Especially when the number one thing that a Commander says they value is the Soldier himself and yet they feel entirely disposable. I wonder what you would say you value if you had to list the top five things on there? Is God, your faith, your relationship with the Almighty, on there?
A lot of people say that they value God. In fact a lot of people say that they are Christians. But, values determine behavior and where your treasure is, that's where your heart is. So do you act like you value God or do you just say it because it's the "right" thing to say? Do you give him your time, treasure, talent, and try to live a life like He asks us to or do you really value something else? The class I was sitting in was about creating a positive command climate and as I thought about the leaders I have worked for, in the Army and out, I could nail down one distinctive trait about the ones I would consider toxic... selfishness. They valued themselves above all else and regardless of what they said... their actions proved it. What do you REALLY value?

Proverbs 24:16 ESV
For the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.
Sunday morning I started my day by going over to Camp Casey and praying for our Expert Infantry Badge candidates before the first event of their actual testing. (If you didn't catch what the rigors of this competition are and mean to a Soldier check out my Word of the Day from last week). The competition started with a Physical Training Test. The Army standard for physical fitness is not one that most civilian people can even meet (which is scoring at least a 60 in each event) and EIB candidates must score above 80 in each event (push ups, situps, and running 2 miles). This is not an easy task especially after two weeks of grueling training from sun up to sun down. I can't do it. But, these men tried.
After the first event I waited as they came off the PT field with their heads hung low and some with tears in their eyes. One word rolling through their mind... failure. More came after the second. After the run only 90 out of 160 were still in the competition. And that's considered a good showing! That leaves a lot of Soldiers walking around with that word haunting their thoughts. Failure. Have you ever given everything you had to something? Tried to come across the finish line only to realize you were 5 seconds too late? Been one sit up short of the prize? Have you ever thought you were a failure?
The difference in this verse between the righteous and the wicked is one thing... persistence. The righteous falls more times but, each time rises back up again. The wicked turn their failures into a time of calamity. "It's ALL OVER!!! Woe is me!!! Waaaah!" This kind of reaction can be most of our initial reaction but, it cannot stay in our hearts. We must rise again. Learn from our failure. When you fail it does not make you a failure. It's HOW you fail that makes you a failure. Will you rise back up this morning from your failure or will you allow it to turn your life into a calamity? Rise up.

Mark 6:37
But he answered, "You give them something to eat."
They said to him, "That would take more than half a year's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?"
My wife is an amazing woman. I definitely married up and I'm really blessed that she even puts up with my shenanigans. When we got married she started to keep a journal of the things that God has done, like seriously miraculous events down to the everyday things that we don't normally give credit for. It's an amazing testimony to the goodness of God in our lives and a reminder that, God will provide. We all need those reminders. The disciples needed this reminder!
In this passage Jesus and the disciples are headed up a mountain to get away from the crowd for a bit but, the people keep right on following them. Over 5,000 of them! It's dinner time, and the crowd didn't come prepared with food to eat, so Jesus tells the disciples to feed them. It is amazing to me that after seeing Jesus perform hundreds of miracles so far during their time with him, the disciples didn't immediately say, "Lord, we trust that You can provide for all these people!" Instead, they went on a food search and frantically tried to solve this problem by themselves. In fact, in John's account of the same event he says that Jesus did this, "to test them."
How many times does God put us in situations in order to show how good He is through us and in our lives but, instead of letting Him work, we try to take over and control it? Remember. How often do we live in a gap of memory that fails to realize that God has provided, is providing, and will provide? Remember. How often do we get stressed out over the seemingly impossible because we try to tackle it with our own power? Remember.
Remember what God has done for you.

Ephesians1:7 NKJV
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace
God graciously graces us with His grace. In the middle of our faults, our pain, our failures, God graciously graces us with His grace. Even before we turn to Him and repent with a grateful heart, God graciously graces us with His grace. When I am an overall crappy human being and a worse follower of Jesus, God graciously graces me with His grace. Everything about reconciling me to Him is done through His grace. It's not about me. It's not about you. It's about Him and what He did for us. The crux of everything rests in His ability to forgive our sins and He does this according to His grace. Grace means getting something we do not deserve. We do not deserve Him, His forgiveness, or His sacrifice. We cannot earn it. We cannot prove ourselves worthy of it. He graciously graces us with His grace in order to redeem us from our sin. From ourselves. You cannot save yourself from yourself. You cannot work yourself into a better position with God by doing this better, or that better. God graciously graces us with His grace. This means that He is in control. He is bigger than you. Will you let Him graciously grace you with His grace or will you continue to fight His will for you by trying to control Him and conform Him to your will? To be truly free we have to yield to the waterfall of His grace.

James 1:2-4
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Yesterday I got the chance to go over to Casey and visit our Soldiers who are competing in the Expert Infantryman's Badge (EIB). This is a grueling test of everything that they have learned over the course of their Army careers and, if passed, sets them apart from their peers as the best the Army has to offer in the infantry. Over the course of two weeks the Soldiers go through a rigorous train up prior to the actual intense testing process. They have to be perfect, precise, and fast in so many areas of combat technique and lifesaving skills. They live in bays without comforts, they sit in the mud, they run until they are exhausted. Their day starts before the sun goes up and ends after it is down... and then they start to study for the next day. Who would volunteer for such a thing? Someone who knows the value of testing.
Testing allows us to see who were are through the toughest of circumstances. Testing shows us where we are weak and need to be made stronger. Testing may seem to break us down but, it also builds us up when we conquer. A test is not something to shy away from. It is not something to be discouraged by. It is an opportunity to show who you are capable of being and what God is capable of doing through you! Do not back down. Do not avoid. Do not be afraid. Conquer. Succeed. Win. God is with you.

1 Corinthians 13:11 ESV
When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.
Having a "child-like faith" is applauded by Jesus in the Bible. It's something to strive for. But, we are called to mature in other areas of our life away from childishness. I have seen so many people who refuse to grow up. Long past the time for their maturity they are still speaking, thinking, and reasoning like a child. You know the people I am talking about. You may be the person I'm talking about. I would characterize what Paul writes about in this verse like this:
1. Speaking like a child = emotional outbursts, unthoughtful remarks, and a distinct lack of vocabulary (every heard someone who can't complete a sentence without utilizing a cuss word?).
2. Thinking like a child = Large gaps in their facts. Finds the easiest form of education (maybe Facebook) and accepts it as truth. Formulates their worldview based on what they are told rather than what they take the time to research, prove, and accept. Putting value on things that have little, or no, real lasting value.
3. Reasoning like a child = Finding ways to blame others for their mistakes or failing to accept responsibility for their own shortcomings. Circular logic that tries to bend the world to their will instead of understanding the will of others... purely selfish.
I think of something my mom used to tell me when I was younger. "If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck... it must be a duck." If we are speaking like a child, thinking like a child, and reasoning like a child then we must be children... not adults. It is time to grow up. It is time to stop sacrificing our future because we want to act like we did as children. It is time to embrace growth and become the men and women that God has called us to be. We can't hold onto childishness and fulfill our adult purposes at the same time. We have to "give up childish ways."
How are you still acting like a child today? How can you start the process into adulthood? What is holding you back from the purpose that God has called you to?
When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

Romans 14:1
As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.
Tis the season for quarreling over opinions. I don't want anyone to think I am downplaying the role of politics in America or the importance of the office of the President of the United States of America but, I absolutely despise voting years. It brings out the worst in us. It should bring out the best. Instead of coming together to select the best of us to lead, we separate along long entrenched lines of battle to select the lesser of two evils. (That's not a commentary on this election in particular). What's worse than political season in America though? A room full of supposed "theologians" or Church leadership in a room discussing matters of faith and the Scriptures. Talk about verbal UFC!
When I was a youth counselor at a summer camp I got to work with my best friend, Jesse, every day. I loved it and that experience helped to form me into the man I am today. We hung out at camp, at home, in our band. We were always together. But, one afternoon as we were driving back to camp we got into a discussion about which translation of the Bible we preferred. We both had our arguments and supporting facts but, by the time we got to camp we were practically shouting at each other. We didn't talk for the entire rotation of campers that week. Over which translation of the Bible we preferred! How stupid. How absolutely idiotic. I lost out on time I could have been having fun with my best friend over an opinion. When we split hairs eventually we start cutting into the skull.
Do you have an opinion that is costing you relationship? Stop. People are more important that opinions. Ask them to forgive you and do not lose another minute over something that will ultimately pass away. Treasure what is true.

1 Corinthians 4:20
For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power.
As I am packing for a two day retreat for Chaplains here in Korea I started to think about power. How am I going to charge my phone, my headphones, or blow up my air mattress (we're sleeping on the floor)? I'm assuming that, since we are going to a civilian location, that the power is going to be 220w instead of the American 110w that all my chargers operate in. I ran into this same problem when we were deployed to Poland last year. While I was trying to set up my theater for the Soldiers I plugged in a 110w power strip to the wall with a small adaptor I had. It popped, sizzled, smoked, and then all the power went out. I flipped the breaker and pulled out another power strip (I don't learn too quickly) only to have it do the exact same thing. I was trying to draw the power out in the wrong way. I didn't have the right conduit for the job.
God is a God of power. He has limitless amounts of it. But, he doesn't throw it around willy nilly. He allows us to tap into Him. To recharge. To become active. To do the miraculous. But, I think there are many times that we try to tap into the power of God with the wrong conduit. We don't want to spend the time in prayer or meditation. We don't want to read the scripture. We just want it now. And then we wonder why we're all blown up, burnt out, and fizzled with no power. The source is there. He's ready to move and work. But, he doesn't work on our terms... we need to work on His.
I ended up buying a 5 port 220w power strip and five different adaptors to make everything work. It cost me a little money and a lot of time to get it all put together. But, when I plugged it in... I had power! I was able to show movies to the Soldiers, host game nights, hold Bible studies, and project for worship services! I just had to take the time to tap into the source their way. Not mine. (Plus, now I have this nifty powerstrip for this weekend's events)!
How do you tap into the power of God? Are you trying to do it your way or His?

2 Samuel 12:13
Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord." Nathan answered, "The Lord has taken away your sin. You will not die."
Sunday I got the chance to preach on the joy of repentance to the congregation here at Camp Stanley out of Psalms 22. Part of the message was understanding the context of the Psalm that was written by David. It was born out of David's sin with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah. What I mentioned, but didn't have the time to stress is that when we sin, when we do something that brings death into our lives, we have a choice to make. We can repent, pay the cost to our ego, get right with God, and move on... or we can deny it, blame, hide it, and flat out rebel against God. When we choose the second course of action we invite further death into our lives. We think we have gotten away with it but, it just encourages more sin... more death... more shame... But, God doesn't just give us one chance to repent of our sin! He brings us to moments, draws our hearts to it, and enables us to come to a place where we are able to weigh the cost, confess, and bring it to Him.
David had so many opportunities to own up to his sin. But, he didn't. He hid it. He blamed others. He tried to lie, cheat, manipulate, and ultimately murder to cover his sin. The decent into death began when he looked at that woman that did not belong to him. He could have taken the hit to the ego. He could have laid it all down to get right with God. But, that was a fear too great for him. What about the kingdom? What about the scandal? He loved himself and what he had built more than God. You have a choice. Either you can try to cover your sin and God will have to uncover you, or you can uncover your sin and God will cover you. Either way the sin is uncovered... it has to be. That's the only way to freedom.
David, after being confronted by the prophet Nathan, finally admits to his sin against God and suffers grave consequences for it. Worse than if he would have just admitted his wrong right off the bat. But, that's not what we worry about at the moment is it? We worry about the immediate cost. What would it take to bring you that place? Freedom is at hand. Will you admit your wrong and grab it or are you still hiding behind excuses and fear?

Proverbs 1:8-9
Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
Happy Mother's Day! (yesterday here in Korea)
Mom's can be such an amazing influence in our lives! My Mom was the one in the family that taught me how to sing, how to stay focused on the task at hand, how to prepare for things to come, to love unconditionally. My wife, the mother of my four children, still teaches me lessons every day in how to love and care for people, how to prioritize people over everything else, and how to live a life that pleases God. Mom's can be something really special! But, it seems like I always here about the flaws of mothers, how they have damaged their children, wronged them, or set them up for failure. I can only say, that although their calling from God is a great one, they are still people too. They are going to make mistakes and those mistakes are going to play out in the lives of their children. However, that doesn't mean that they are to be disrespected and ignored. Can you imagine if everyone treated everyone else like that?
Today is a day that we focus in on the great things that our mom's taught us. Give them the honor that is due them for bringing us into their lives. Into our lives. Focus in on the great parts of who that woman is to you today and try to forgive any hurts or harms that may have been done. Call your momma. Let her know you love her.

2 Kings 4:32-33
"When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. So he went in and shut the door behind the two of them and prayed to the LORD."
This verse doesn't stand to well on its own so, let me give it a little context. Elisha was a powerful prophet of God during the Old Testament and performed lots of miracles throughout his life. While he was traveling from place to place he would stop and stay and different peoples' homes. One older lady, in particular, had gone and made him his own room on the roof of her house so that he could be more comfortable. So, he prayed to God that she would conceive in her old age and have a son... which she did. But, then the child died. The woman was obviously upset and called for Elisha to come and asked why he even bothered to give her a son if the boy was just going to die.
So Elisha sent her his staff and told her to place it on him. He thought that would be enough to raise him from the dead. But, it wasn't. So, when he showed up the boy was still dead. Elisha wasn't used to having his prayers go unanswered. This is the dude that called out bears to maul some teenagers that teased him about being bald! This is the guy that used dirty laundry to split the Jordan river! This guy was a miracle worker. But, his first attempt didn't work. He could have just stopped and said, "Oh well, looks like it's not God's will." But, Elisha knew the power of prayer and the power of God. So, he tried again.
Elisha goes in the room, shuts the door, and lays down on top of the boy face to face and prays for God to heal him. His second attempt is a failure. Does he give up? Would you? He paces around the room and then gets on top of the kid again and prays. The third time around the child wakes up and sneezes seven times. He's alive. God answered Elisha's payer... finally.
Sometimes it may feel like God's not answering our particular prayer. Sometimes it may feel like the one thing we have is dead and gone without recourse. But, even if God has worked one way in the past it does not mean he is going to do the same in the future. Don't mistake the fact that you not getting what you want the way you want it means God is inactive. Sometimes it just means you have to keep on praying, keep on trying, and have faith that we serve a God who can raise the dead... what you are facing is well within His control. What have you given up praying for today that you need to revisit?

John 3:8
"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
Yesterday we had a pretty heavy wind storm here on Camp Stanley. It blew over multiple trees, one of which landed directly on my barracks building next to my window at midnight. The workmen showed up and started chain sawing it up soon after and I could sleep much at all. But, I started to think about the wind. How powerful. How unassuming. How little I think about the wind until it affects something around me.
We feel the wind and know it is there but, most of the time it is not an interference in our lives. Yet, it is an extremely powerful force of nature. It can rip trees from the ground, grind rocks to dust over time, and literally move mountains in the desert. But, I don't even pay attention to it day by day. It's like that with the spirit. We can go through our day and completely ignore its presence. We can simply discount its existence on most days. But, sometimes it starts blowing over trees in our roads. Some days it grabs our coattails and pulls us one way or another. Some days it simply will not be ignored.
And yet, do we only want to acknowledge the Spirit of God on the days when it is moving in power or do we want to be knowledgeable of its movements every day? It's like the wind that way. I can always feel the wind if I pay close enough attention. I can feel it out and sense its direction if I give it effort. It can drive us and direct us every single day. Take a moment and stand in the wind today. Will you follow the Spirit's guidance or does He have to knock over a tree to get your attention?

1 Chronicles 11:12 (ESV)
"And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen."
What will you be remembered for? This verse finds itself toward the beginning of the list of names of men who fought with David. His mighty men. As you read the chapter you can hear about some amazing feats of gallantry and heroism as they slayed their enemies and preserved their leaders. But, it is also a list. Just a list. There are a lot of names in short succession. Names. It would be an honor just to be on this list. But, some of the names got a story beside them. A tale of their deeds. A recognition of their legacy. Benaiah was one of those guys.
Shannon L. Alder says, "Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you." What will you do today that will leave a legacy worth remembering. I'm sure that Benaiah didn't wake up one morning and say, "I'm going to go down into a pit, kill me a lion, and hope it's snowing a bit." No, he did what was required of him on that day to the best of his ability. There may not be lions where you live but, we are surrounded by evil that lurks and wants to steal, kill, and destroy those around us. What kind of person will you be today? Will you do something that people will talk about or will you just let today slip through your fingers. God has something for you TODAY. That's why you are where you are. Look for that lion, and even if it's in a snowy pit, jump down there and leave a legacy.
