1 Chronicles 11:12 (ESV)
"And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen."
What will you be remembered for? This verse finds itself toward the beginning of the list of names of men who fought with David. His mighty men. As you read the chapter you can hear about some amazing feats of gallantry and heroism as they slayed their enemies and preserved their leaders. But, it is also a list. Just a list. There are a lot of names in short succession. Names. It would be an honor just to be on this list. But, some of the names got a story beside them. A tale of their deeds. A recognition of their legacy. Benaiah was one of those guys.
Shannon L. Alder says, "Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you." What will you do today that will leave a legacy worth remembering. I'm sure that Benaiah didn't wake up one morning and say, "I'm going to go down into a pit, kill me a lion, and hope it's snowing a bit." No, he did what was required of him on that day to the best of his ability. There may not be lions where you live but, we are surrounded by evil that lurks and wants to steal, kill, and destroy those around us. What kind of person will you be today? Will you do something that people will talk about or will you just let today slip through your fingers. God has something for you TODAY. That's why you are where you are. Look for that lion, and even if it's in a snowy pit, jump down there and leave a legacy.
